The royal palace of Madrid built in the XVIII century, is the official residence of the Spanish royal family at the city of Madrid, although now only used for state ceremonies. It is the largest functioning royal palace and the largest by floor area in Europe contains 3,418 rooms.

The palace locates on the site of a 9th-century Moorish Alcázar. After Madrid fell to King Alfonso VI of Castile in 1083, the edifice was only rarely used by the kings of Castile until King Felipe II moved his court to Madrid in 1561.
After it burned 24 December 1734, King Felipe V ordered a new palace built on the same site. Construction spanned the years 1738 to 1755 and King Carlos III first occupied the new palace in 1764. The last monarch who lived continuously in the palace was King Alfonso XIII, although Manuel Azaña, president of the Second Republic, also inhabited it, making him the last head of state to do so.
First of All, you must see the luxurious rooms!!
In more than 3,000 rooms, the palace is exposed about 50 rooms to the public. These rooms are represented the palace with their old glory. Each room is designed in unique way following the famous artists such as Sacchetti, Gasprini and so on.

The Crown Room houses designed by Sacchetti and is the important symbols of the monarchy namely the Crown and Royal Sceptre and Proclamation Speech of King Felipe VI among other regalia.
The largest room in the palace was converted by 3 rooms by Alfonso XII, and there are more than 150 seating areas.
The Campo del Moro means the Park of the Moors originated the Muslim leader Ali ben Yusuf who camped here with his troops in 1109 during an attempted reconquest of Madrid. Moreover, the park was designed in the Romanticist style with elegance fountains from Aranjuez (aka The triton fountain) and infante (aka The fountain of the shells.).

The palace is closed on 1st May, 25th December, 1st and 6th January.

Basically the ticket is 10 €. If you are an EU citizen/resident, the free entry is valid 2 hours before the closing time. Highly recommend to buy the ticket in advance on online otherwise a long queue is expected to purchase it. There are free entry days on 18th May(International museum day) and 12th October(National day).
If you want to feel the moment of traditions, pleae don’t miss out the opportunity! Changing of the guard on every Wednesdays and Saturdays in Puerta del Principe at 11am to 14pm(10am to 12pm in July & August), Solemn changing of the guard, which recalls the one made daily in times of kings Alfonso XII and Alfonso XIII, takes place the first Wednesday of every month(except January, August and September.) in the Armoury Square at 12pm.

Let’s meet some locals in Plaza Puerta del Sol! Puerta del Sol means the gate of the sun, it is famous for the meeting place to Madrid citizens. It is located in the heart of Madrid, you can go to the Madrid palace to the west of the plaza and Prado museum to the east of the plaza within walking distance.
